DuckDB 2.0 adds server connections and async I/O, with support through 2027
DuckDB has released version 2.0.0, an LTS feature update supported until at least October 2027. The DuckDB team says it adds a client-server protocol, asynchronous file reads, a fully integrated VARIANT type, CLI agent mode, triggers and an extensible SQL parser; versions before 2.0 cannot read database files created by 2.0.
Bottom line — DuckDB 2.0 is supported until October 2027, but older versions cannot open files it creates.

-
The DuckDB team says the new CONNECT statement can switch to remote databases including PostgreSQL and MySQL; a remote pushdown optimizer sends queries to those servers.
-
Asynchronous I/O handles Parquet, CSV and native-format reads in the background, which the DuckDB team says increases parallelism for remote reads.
-
In the team's TPC-H experiments, CLI agent mode reduced the output a model had to read by 59%.
-
The new default PEG-based parser lets extensions add SQL syntax; DuckDB says users can switch back with the legacy_parser extension.
-
DuckDB 2.0 can read and write existing database files, but earlier versions cannot read files created by 2.0. The team recommends testing on a shadow system before production migration.
-
DuckDB 1.4 remains supported until late November 2026, while support for 1.5 has been extended to March 2027.

The old single-arrow lambda syntax is disabled by default; DuckDB says it will be removed in version 2.1.
