India will require WhatsApp and Telegram accounts to stay linked to active SIMs from 2027
India’s Department of Telecommunications has given messaging platforms until 31 December 2026 to comply with rules linking accounts registered with Indian mobile numbers to an active SIM or eSIM on the device. From 1 January 2027, WhatsApp and Telegram users could lose access if the registered SIM is removed, deactivated or replaced; the DoT says the rules are intended to curb cyber fraud and misuse of Indian numbers.
Bottom line — The rules are due to take effect on 1 January 2027, but platforms’ implementation details remain unsettled.
