Amazon replaces its Fire tablets with pricier Android-based Alexa Tablets from 230 euros

Amazon is discontinuing its budget Fire tablet line and launching three Alexa Tablets in 8, 11 and 12-inch sizes, priced from 230 euros to 500 euros for the 12 Pro, with Nanomatte display versions at 550 euros. The devices run Android with full Google Play Store access, a first for Amazon, and go on sale 14 October in the US and 19 October in the UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain, according to the company's announcement as reported by several outlets. Amazon says it will support Fire tablets for four years after the final shipment, and CNBC reports the company denied rising memory costs drove the price rises.

Bottom line — The Alexa Tablet 12 Pro at 500 euros sits at roughly half the price of Apple's 11-inch iPad Pro, which starts at 1,199 euros (1,199 US dollars).

Fortune notes Amazon is moving upmarket as IDC reported global tablet shipments fell 12.3 percent year-on-year in the second quarter to 33.6 million units, with US shipments down 31.6 percent.
CNBC reports Amazon's devices chief Panos Panay admitted the memory shortage made it 'quite tricky' to build a premium tablet at a reasonable price without trade-offs.
The Verge and Gizmodo both describe Amazon's Alexa+ assistant as opt-in for on-screen intelligence, with a visual indicator when it is listening or seeing.
WIRED says the Fire line's custom Android version and limited app library were the main sticking point, while the new tablets offer official Android with full Play Store access.
The Shortcut says the Nanomatte display was co-developed with Corning and is a 150 euro (149.99 US dollars equivalent upgrade) premium exclusive to the 12 Pro for now.
Engadget reports the Alexa Tablet 12 Pro pairs an optional Pro Keyboard at 150 euros (149.99 US dollars) and Pro Pen at 90 euros (89.99 US dollars), as a laptop-like setup.

Germany blocks Cosco's bid for 80% of Hamburg logistics firm Zippel on security grounds

The German Economy Ministry has blocked Chinese state-owned shipper Cosco's planned purchase of an 80% stake in Hamburg-based Zippel, citing threats to supply-chain resilience. The ministry said the deal "would have deepened dependencies" and that Germany welcomes foreign investment but will prohibit deals that threaten security. Zippel, with around 350 employees, says operations will continue unchanged.

Bottom line — Cosco must now await Berlin's final word on what it does next, after a deal cleared by antitrust authorities in February was stopped on security grounds.

Astronomers detect blazar OP 313, the most distant of its kind, 8 billion light-years away

Astronomers at the University of Geneva and the LST-1 and MAGIC telescopes on La Palma, Spain, report the most distant very high-energy blazar yet recorded, OP 313, whose light has taken eight billion years to reach Earth. According to the team, the gamma-ray emission was fuelled by relativistic electrons accelerated in a jet from the central supermassive black hole. Published in Astronomy & Astrophysics, the findings are presented as a step forward in understanding flat-spectrum radio quasars.

Bottom line — The CTAO's Large-Sized Telescope sub-array, due to be inaugurated on La Palma on 15 October 2026, is expected to extend the observable gamma-ray horizon further.

Declan Rice nears new long-term Arsenal deal, pay to rise towards Saka's level

Arsenal are close to agreeing a new long-term contract with England midfielder Declan Rice, according to BBC Sport, with talks at an advanced stage. His current weekly pay of around €278,000 (£240,000) would rise towards the €406,000 (£350,000) Bukayo Saka reportedly earns, putting him on par with the club's top earner. Rice joined from West Ham for €122 million (£105 million) in 2023 and his current deal runs out at the end of next season.

Jonathan, a 194-year-old Aldabra tortoise, may owe his longevity to stable gene switches

Scientists studying Jonathan, estimated to be about 194 years old and the world's oldest known living land animal, say his longevity may come from genetic traits and cellular systems that stay youthful. According to the study in Science Advances, he lives on the South Atlantic island of St Helena, where he has been since 1882. The findings may help explain resistance to aging, a question that matters across species, including humans.

Bottom line — The study covers only one exceptionally old tortoise, so its authors say they cannot yet confirm these traits are the reason for his age.

CrowdStrike links South Korean bank hacks to 26-year-old in China using AI coding tools

US cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike said the suspect behind attacks on South Korean financial institutions from late September to early October may be a 26-year-old in China's Guangdong province, who used the Chinese-developed ARTEX tool and Anthropic's Claude Code. French government bond yields have sold off sharply, with the spread over German Bunds reaching a level last seen around 2011-2012, according to Bloomberg and Reuters. Analysts at Commerzbank and ING say the ECB's Transmission Protection Instrument is unlikely to be used soon, with softer rate guidance and reinvestment of maturing bonds seen as earlier steps. Morningstar reports the Bank of France governor urged Paris to restore confidence through fiscal repair rather than rely on ECB support.

Bottom line — Analysts cite contagion to Italy, Greece and Belgium as the trigger that would most likely push the ECB into bond purchases.

US investor could enter Nord Stream pipelines as Kushner and Dmitriev discuss Russian gas deal

Senior US and Russian officials, including US Special Envoy Jared Kushner and Kirill Dmitriev, have discussed bringing a US investor into the Nord Stream pipelines, according to five people cited by Reuters. A White House official said there had been "no Nord Stream discussions recently" and that any deal must benefit US taxpayers and companies. A US official judged a deal unlikely in the medium term, given US and EU sanctions on the pipelines.

Bottom line — Germany, Poland and the Baltic states oppose reopening the pipelines, and a deal would also require Gazprom and two German shareholders to agree.

UN peacekeepers' southern Lebanon base hit by gunfire

UNIFIL, the UN Interim Force in Lebanon, said several rounds of small arms fire struck its position near Kfar Shouba on the Blue Line, damaging accommodation units and UN vehicles, though no one was hurt. The mission said it had launched an investigation and did not name who fired, while warning that attacks on peacekeepers may amount to war crimes. The incident lands as Lebanon and Israel's June Framework Agreement, which provides for a gradual Israeli withdrawal, is being tested by continued attacks.

Bottom line — Israel continues operations in southern Lebanon despite the June 26 Framework Agreement, and UNIFIL's investigation has yet to name a shooter.

France suspends stun grenades after 15-year-old loses hand at student protest

France's interior minister Laurent Nuñez suspended police use of stun grenades at high-school protests after a 15-year-old's hand was torn off in Lens, a case the government says remains unclear. Over 500 schools were still fully or partially shut as the wave of protests, now more than two weeks old, continued, with unions planning a fourth day of marches on Thursday. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu promised proposals by late October but gave no details, and the protests are unfolding months before a presidential election in April.

Bottom line — Student unions say 450,000 protesters marched while the government counts 250,000, and Lecornu's promised proposals are not due until the end of October.

Ghana logs about 450 suspected yellow fever cases since June, with three confirmed in Upper West

Ghana's Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh told a Ministry of Health briefing in Accra that about 450 suspected yellow fever cases were recorded between June and September 2026. Of these, 74 were in the Upper West Region, where three have been confirmed, according to the minister. The WHO places Ghana among high-risk countries with moderate regional transmission risk.

Bottom line — Only three of 74 Upper West cases are confirmed, so the true scale of the outbreak remains unclear until laboratory testing is complete.

Washington opens direct talks with Myanmar's junta chief, reversing years of isolation

The US has begun direct talks with Myanmar's military-installed government, according to Reuters, citing US officials and people familiar with the outreach. The focus is on shutting down scam centres that defraud Americans and possibly rare-earth deposits, with Min Aung Hlaing, still under US sanctions, central to the contact. Meanwhile, Malaysia is hosting him as it repatriates thousands of Myanmar nationals that the UN and rights groups warn face danger.

Bottom line — Min Aung Hlaing's engagements with Washington and Kuala Lumpur, despite sanctions and an airstrike that killed at least 58 people, show his international standing is being rebuilt.

UK weighs tariffs on Chinese EVs as Brussels seeks closer alignment on China trade

The UK government is considering raising tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles, with one option of up to 45% matching the EU, according to The Telegraph and PravdaReport, though the government says no decision has been taken. The EU is reportedly pressing London to align, warning UK carmakers may not count as European under the proposed Industrial Accelerator Act if it does not. Chinese brands already hold around 12% of UK new car sales this year.

Bottom line — Whether Britain matches EU duties will decide if UK carmakers keep access to European 'Made in Europe' subsidies and procurement, with Chinese brands at roughly 12% of UK sales.

Russia's silence on lab worker's death leaves WHO seeking answers on suspected plague

The World Health Organization is pressing Russia for more information after a 28-year-old lab worker, identified by Russian media as Darya Shipilova, died in early October at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute in Siberia. Russian authorities say she died of pneumonia of unknown origin and that no plague was found, while about 200 contacts were monitored and a hospital was quarantined. Western officials and experts say the lack of transparency keeps the case under scrutiny, though the WHO considers the general public risk low.

Bottom line — Russia's contradictory messaging means the WHO still lacks the pathogen behind a Siberian death, with roughly 200 contacts under observation.

Solar Orbiter traces magnetic switchbacks in solar wind back to their origin on the Sun

The European Space Agency's Solar Orbiter flew through a large S-shaped magnetic kink, or switchback, in the solar wind and identified its source at the Sun's surface, according to ESA and the paper's lead author, Jesse Coburn of CNRS/LPP. The team found charged oxygen and carbon particles that could only have formed in hot magnetic loops at the Sun's surface, which the authors call the signature of interchange reconnection.

Bottom line — ESA's Daniel Müller says the findings could help predict solar storms and protect space infrastructure, though the mechanism behind switchbacks is not yet fully settled.

Netflix's seven-part East of Eden tops global streaming charts with 6.5 million views

Netflix's seven-episode adaptation of John Steinbeck's East of Eden, starring Florence Pugh, took the No. 1 spot on its global Top 10 for the week of 28 September to 4 October, with 6.5 million views and 45.5 million hours watched, according to Netflix's Tudum. Critics largely agree the show is strong: it holds an 87% Rotten Tomatoes critic score and an 83% audience score. The adaptation reframes Cathy Ames as a more sympathetic, trauma-shaped figure, a choice that has split viewers.

Bottom line — Pugh's Cathy has become the show's central debate, with critics praising the nuance and some viewers arguing it undermines Steinbeck's villain.

IMF's Georgieva says AI boom is both growth engine and inequality risk as debt and energy costs bite

IMF managing director Kristalina Georgieva, speaking in Singapore ahead of the annual meetings in Bangkok, said AI investment is becoming a key driver of countries' fortunes but is largely bypassing many economies. She described a negative energy supply shock from the Gulf war alongside a positive AI demand shock, and called for overdue fiscal consolidation in highly indebted advanced economies. Oil remains above $100 a barrel (roughly 92 euros), according to the IMF.

Bottom line — IMF director Georgieva cautions against delaying tough debt decisions, and that AI earnings must justify lofty valuations or risk leaving the world exposed to a far-reaching shock.
