Shigeru Miyamoto becomes first game creator to receive Japan’s Order of Culture
Japan has named Nintendo creator Shigeru Miyamoto, 73, a recipient of the Order of Culture, the first person from the video game industry to receive the honour. The Yomiuri Shimbun reports that he credited the award to collaboration with colleagues behind games including Donkey Kong, Super Mario Bros and The Legend of Zelda; the ceremony is scheduled for 3 November at the Imperial Palace.
Bottom line — The Order of Culture recognises Miyamoto’s work in a field Japan is now formally treating as part of its cultural life.
