Google launches SynthID detector for AI images, videos and audio

Google has launched a tool that checks images, videos and audio for its invisible SynthID watermarks, including marks on content made with Google AI tools and some partners’ systems. The Star reports that more than 180 billion files have been watermarked since SynthID was introduced in 2023, according to Google; the detector cannot identify every AI-generated file because not all are marked.

Bottom line — SynthID’s reach is broad, but Google’s detector only confirms a watermark when it finds one.

  1. The Star says supported partners include OpenAI, Nvidia and Kakao, with Apple expected to be added.

  2. Google DeepMind says watermarks are added when content is created and are designed to survive cropping, filters, frame-rate changes and lossy compression.

  3. Google’s help page says Gemini can identify which parts of a video contain a detected SynthID watermark, without confirming it is present throughout those parts.

  4. The Star reports that OpenAI also offers an online tool to check images and audio for evidence they were made with its tools.
