Apple moves original 2017 Apple TV 4K to vintage list four days before new model

Apple has added the first-generation Apple TV 4K, released in 2017 and discontinued in April 2021, to its vintage products list, according to MacRumors and MacDailyNews. The move signals limited repair options for the device, since vintage products are serviced only while parts last. A fourth-generation model is expected to be unveiled at Apple's "Welcome home" event on Tuesday, 13 October.

Bottom line — The original Apple TV 4K is now vintage, with repairs dependent on remaining parts until it reaches obsolete status after seven years.

Pocket-lint reports that Apple's tvOS 27 update supports only the 2021 and 2022 Apple TV 4K models, so the 2017 box has already lost official software support.
The Mac Observer describes the 2017 model's glass Siri Remote as easily broken and hard to use in the dark, a detail it presents as a reason for the device's retirement.
iDrop News notes that the 2015 Apple TV HD was briefly listed as obsolete in April 2026 before Apple quietly rolled back that entry in June, leaving only the early 2016 variant listed.
iDrop News argues the 2015 Apple TV HD may outlive its 4K successor on the vintage timeline, since at least some variants remained on sale until October 2022.
Wikipedia records that the 2017 model supported 4K output, HDR10 and Dolby Vision, and was discontinued in 2021 when the second-generation model was announced.
MacDailyNews reports that rumoured upgrades for the new model include a newer chip, an N-series networking component, a revised Siri Remote and Apple Intelligence features.
Pocket-lint lists rumoured upgrades for the new model as an A19-generation chipset, Wi-Fi 7 and Siri AI support, citing expectations rather than confirmed specifications.

OpenAI model disproves Erdős's 1946 unit distance conjecture, a problem open for nearly 80 years

OpenAI said an internal general-purpose reasoning model produced a proof disproving Paul Erdős's conjecture that square-grid constructions are essentially optimal for the planar unit distance problem. Europe's major rivers hit record-low summer flows, disrupting shipping, nuclear cooling and hydropower

Copernicus, the EU's Earth observation programme, reported that Europe's summer of 2026 was its third-warmest on record and that western Europe's was the warmest, with 12 major rivers including the Rhine, Danube and Po recording their lowest summer flows since records began in 1992. According to Copernicus, the low flows caused major disruption to cargo transport and to nuclear reactor cooling, and cut hydropower output. Researchers identify archaeon with smallest known archaeal genome, 189 proteins, depending on a host

Scientists have identified Candidatus Sukunaarchaeum mirabile, an archaeon with a 238,034 base-pair genome encoding 189 proteins, according to Laboratory News and TechTimes, which both report the study published in Current Biology. The organism has retained genes for copying DNA and making proteins but has lost almost all genes for producing nutrients and energy, so it likely depends on another organism, though no host has yet been identified. The genome was less than half the size of the previous archaeal record, Nanoarchaeum equitans, at 490,000 base pairs.

A study in Nature Geoscience suggests the cloud that forms each morning downwind of Mars’s Arsia Mons may grow through homogeneous nucleation: water vapour freezing directly into ice without dust. Models matched Mars Express observations more closely when this process was included, after winds lifted moist air and temperatures fell by about 30°C in 10 minutes. The mechanism is inferred from modelling, not directly observed, and some details of the simulated cloud do not match observations.

Bottom line — Further Mars Express observations will test whether homogeneous nucleation explains the cloud’s daily cycle.
