CERN moving 2,200+ accelerator control computers from RHEL to Debian 13
CERN is migrating over 2,200 industrial computers and embedded systems that operate its particle accelerator complex to Debian 13 by the end of 2026, according to engineers at a recent MiniDebConf. The shift, driven by Red Hat's decision to raise minimum CPU requirements in RHEL 9 and 10, avoids an estimated CHF 5.4 million hardware replacement with a 'software solution to a software problem,' per the engineers.
