Ancient interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS is a deep-freeze relic from before the Solar System

3I/ATLAS, discovered in July 2025 by the ATLAS survey, is only the third confirmed object from another star system. Its orbit has a record eccentricity of 6.14, and chemical analysis shows it formed in extreme cold, possibly twice as old as our Solar System — offering scientists a pristine sample of another planetary system's building blocks.

Bottom line — Per multiple studies, 3I/ATLAS's composition and orbit confirm it as an ancient interstellar interloper with no signs of alien technology.

  • 3I/ATLAS was first spotted on 1 July 2025 inside Jupiter's orbit, with an eccentricity of 6.14 — the highest ever recorded for any object in the Solar System, per Wikipedia.
  • A UK-led team used the WEAVE instrument on the William Herschel Telescope to identify five different ion types in the comet's tail, finding temperatures below -240°C, according to Dr. Lea Ferellec of Northumbria University (Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society).
  • The object contains abundant methanol and molecular nitrogen, with isotopic ratios suggesting it formed in a protoplanetary disk at temperatures below 30 Kelvin, around a low-mass, metal-poor star, per HotHardware.
  • Dr. Cyrielle Opitom of the University of Edinburgh co-led research indicating the comet may be up to twice as old as our 4.6-billion-year-old Solar System, according to the same report.
  • A SETI search using the Allen Telescope Array scanned 1–9 GHz for over seven hours, detecting 74 million narrowband signals; all were traced to human sources, ruling out transmitters stronger than 10–110 watts, per ScitechDaily.
  • The observations were enabled by Director's Discretionary Time, highlighting the urgency of studying interstellar visitors, ING Director Rubén Sánchez-Janssen told Starlust.
