Shanghai Jiao Tong’s AutoDNA lab runs DNA experiments from a simple prompt
Shanghai Jiao Tong University researchers have built AutoDNA, a lab where AI agents plan and run DNA experiments using robotic arms and more than 20 types of instrument. In tests reported by Nature, it detected a cancer-linked mutation and encoded and read back a message in DNA; people still replenish reagents and service hardware.
Bottom line — AutoDNA completed the DNA message demonstration in 11,382 operations over about eight days, according to the researchers.

Nature reports that the AI agents plan experiments from a human prompt and coordinate the lab’s instruments, rather than handling just one step.
-
The message encoded in DNA was “Intelligence is the ability to adapt to change”, a quote often misattributed to Stephen Hawking, Nature notes.

The researchers also tested AutoDNA on a cancer-linked mutation; Nature describes this as a demonstration, not a clinical diagnostic service.

Nature quotes co-author Haibo Chen saying many existing automated systems still require human experts to configure instruments.
