Seven new diamond frog species raise Madagascar’s known total to 27

Researchers have identified seven new species of diamond frogs, a secretive group that spends much of its life beneath Madagascar’s forest floor. DNA from museum specimens, field observations, anatomy and frog calls helped the team distinguish the species and resolve decades of uncertainty over their names. The findings are already informing proposals to strengthen and expand protected areas in Madagascar.

Bottom line — The seven discoveries bring the known Rhombophryne total to 27, though researchers say more species remain to be found.

  1. According to ScienceDaily and EurekAlert, the project began more than 12 years ago, after researchers repeatedly encountered frogs that did not match known species.

  2. The team used “museomics”: sequencing DNA from preserved museum specimens, including original type specimens, to link historical names with modern genetic lineages.

  3. ScienceDaily and EurekAlert report that the frogs’ hidden markings can include flashes of orange or bold black-and-white patterns, which researchers think may startle predators.

  4. At a protected-area planning workshop in March 2026, several newly described species, including Rhombophryne quentini, informed proposals to strengthen and expand protected areas.

  5. Co-author Andolalao Rakotoarison told ScienceDaily and EurekAlert that researchers still know little about many species’ breeding, population sizes and ecological needs.
