EA finds Wing Commander III master tapes for planned anniversary edition

Electronic Arts has found the original tapes containing high-quality footage for Wing Commander III, footage that was believed lost after developer Origin Systems closed in 2004. EA producer Jim Vessella said the material is being restored for a planned 30th Anniversary Edition; attendee reports say it will include both the new footage and an upscaled version.

Bottom line — The planned edition would restore footage from the 1994 game, originally compressed to 320×240.

INQUIRER.net reports the original footage was compressed in a format called Xanmovie.
Attendee reports cited by INQUIRER.net say players will be able to switch between the original footage and its upscale.
Vessella also mentioned Kilrathi Saga integration and community enhancement patches, according to INQUIRER.net.
Wing Commander III featured live-action performances by Mark Hamill, Malcolm McDowell and John Rhys-Davies, INQUIRER.net reports.
The Portland Retro Gaming Expo panel was still under way when WCNews published its report; the site said it was seeking further confirmation.

Belgian study finds private-equity buyouts lift suppliers—until downturns

A study by European Central Bank and KU Leuven researchers, using Belgian firm data, finds suppliers of private-equity-backed companies record about 6% higher sales, 4% higher employment and 6% higher earnings after a buyout. The gains fade during downturns, when suppliers’ markups fall by about 8% as investors press for cost savings and change supplier relationships.

Bottom line — The researchers also link buyouts to weaker performance among competitors that depend on the same suppliers.

Drupal patches two critical remote-code flaws across all supported versions

Drupal has patched two critical remote-code-execution vulnerabilities affecting all supported versions of its content management system: one in the core Field UI module and one in the Entity List module. Israel’s opposition seeks to oust Netanyahu, but offers no shared path to Palestinian statehood

Five opposition leaders have agreed to work together to remove Benjamin Netanyahu in Israel’s 27 October election, though their pact leaves open who would lead a coalition. Solar driveways turn European patios into small power stations

European households are adding solar panels to driveways and patios as high energy bills encourage interest in home generation, Euronews reports. Hungary-based PLATIO has installations in 13 European countries; its 9-square-metre driveway system in Hungary is rated at 1.7 kWp, while a courtyard installation near Frankfurt is rated at 6.64 kWp. Cassini’s Enceladus grains reveal salts sorted by slow freezing

Researchers analysed 961 Cassini measurements of salt-rich ice grains from Enceladus and found that different grains often contain different salts. In laboratory experiments, droplets around 200 micrometres across developed separated salt regions when they froze slowly; the researchers propose that larger frozen droplets then shattered inside the moon’s vents, producing the diverse grains Cassini detected. The study, published in Science Advances, says this process could concentrate compounds for future spacecraft to analyse, but does not show that life is present.
