Italy cuts airspace capacity after data network fault disrupts flights
A fault in the data transmission network supporting Italy’s air traffic control disrupted flights on Friday, prompting ENAV and Eurocontrol to reduce the number of aircraft allowed in Italian airspace from 06:00. ENAV said operations had continued at normal capacity until then and ruled out a cyberattack or sabotage; the authority is working to restore full service, with delays and cancellations reported across Italian airports.
Bottom line — At least four flights were cancelled at Rome Fiumicino as Italy’s air traffic management ran at around half normal capacity, according to ENAV.
